Risk Assessments and Safety Audits
Risk assessment as a concept arose in the 1974 Health and Safety
at Work Act although it only came to prominence with the introduction of
the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (CoSHH) for chemicals
and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, for general
risks (both regs since amended).
Auditing is a tool more commonly used across disciplines within industries. Our audit is designed to give you a snapshot of where a business currently stands and direction on where where it needs to go in the future, allowing for detailed resource planning.
Risk assessments
Risk assessment can be a very useful safety tool, but like all tools it
must be used properly. There is little benefit in producing a mountain of
documents if nobody understands and uses them.
|
Self Risk Assessments
HSMC can train one or more of your employees in risk assessment and provide them with
the methods and tools to do them, including a simple risk assessment system. This will enable an ongoing in-house
system to be developed simply and easily. |
Assisted Risk Assessments
HSMC can come into your workplace and work with you to complete
the risk assessment. We will identify the relevant needs, do the assessments and then
provide you with the completed documents. We try to keep the assessments
as simple as possible and will assess by job, by department, by location,
by risk or whatever combination of these is considered appropriate. |
Health and Safety Auditing
Safety audits are an excellent method for managing health and safety
in the workplace. The ability to stop and examine your procedures and employee
behaviours at a specific point in time can help in many ways. As businesses
develop often the focus can unintentionally move from the actual need to
what is perceived as a need or end up too focused on the paperwork system.
An audit can help either confirm that the perception indeed holds true or
help realign practice with need. Audits also help in business planning by identifying what
needs to be done and allowing it to be prioritised.
HSMC's health and safety audit package includes:
Part 1. Health and Safety Systems Audit
This commences with
a question and answer section which determines if the organisation
has basic systems in place for managing the various aspects
of health and safety.
Next, a tour is made of the workplace or site looking for specific hazards
and also examining individual jobs. A note is made of the tasks
being performed, tools used, chemicals involved, personnel working there, etc. and this is used to follow-through
on selected management systems. For example, an operator may be
seen using a particular cleaning machine on the tour so we would look at the risk assessment for that machine, the
CoSHH assessments, training records, maintenance systems, etc.
In a nutshell, the first part checks the systems are in place and the
second part confirms that they are being correctly implemented and followed-through.
Part 2. Compliance Audit
Here, we conduct a check against the main applicable
pieces of health and safety legislation in force affecting the
organisation. This two-pronged approach provides an excellent review of the company controls.
|
All audits include preparation of a recommended action plan to help with initial guidance on how to approach the issued raised, along with a presentation of the findings
to management meetings, safety committees, etc. allowing discussion of the results and recommended actions.
