Health and Safety for Managers and Directors
Managers and Directors hold ultimate responsibility for health and safety and while responsibility for the day to day performance and implementation of a health and safety strategy can be delegated to others, ultimate responsibility always rests with manages and directors of the company. Each individual supervisor, line manager, department manager, etc. is always responsible for their area and people, with the most senior person in the company holding ultimate authority and consequently accoutability.
This course is aimed at these managers, detailing the requirements of their job, explaining that there is no legal ambiguity surrounding this accountability, and giving them the necessary knowledge and information to meet these obligations. Each course is tailored specifically to the management level of the attendees thus a course for supervisors or line managers will be pitched at a different level to a course attended by board members and directors. The course can be undertaken in one 'hit' or can be split into two or more sessions depending on availability of attendees.

Safe Manager Training: course content
As this is training which is carried out on your site and is dedicated to your business and people we can build a course which is specific to the risks your managers will face. We can include elements of your own policies and procedures to ensure the information provided is directly mirroring the systems managers and supervisors will work with in your business.
We can also change the pitch of the course to cover the level of the attendees present - for example, if they are team leaders and supervisors then the sectons on measuring performance and organising safety could be replaced by modules covering noise, handling, work equipment, etc. The following is an example outline but also see the Safety Reps training section of this sit for a list of other modules which we can include.
Safe Manager Training (Part 1): course contents
| Basic principles of health and safety |
How health and safety regulations are constructed, what they mean for companies and managers, the principle of reasonably practicable. |
| Hazard assessment and controlling risks |
The most basic building-block of health and safety. Managers need to understand its approach and the implications of it from a business management perspective, including the corrective action decision making process. |
| Understanding responsibilities |
What being a manager means for health and safety including the responsibilities which go with all levels of manager. |
| Accident Management |
More than just accident investigation - managers need to drive the process to get the best results from it thus minimising the risks of repetition and financial liabilities. This is also the issue which is most likely to get the HSE inspectors darkening your doorstep so we cover the mandatory reporting elements relating to accidents and ill health. |
| Measuring performance |
As in most aspects of business management, if you don't measure performance it is hard to determine success. Also include a discussion of the pros and cons of safety incentive schemes. Includes setting of health and safety objectives and some of the systems available to do this. |
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Safe Manager Training (Part 2): course contents
| Behavioural safety |
Looks at why people act unsafely and the methods which can be employed to modify behaviours. |
| Routine inspections |
Management of health and safety in an ongoing process and routine inspections form a key part of this. Managers may do these themselves or may have others who do this for them, but it is important that managers know what is required - its about controlling risks and, importantly from a regulatory perspective, proving compliance. Looks at routine inspections such as daily start-up checks, monthly inspections and annual auditing. |
| Fire risks |
Fire is one of the most important risks faced in almost all workplaces. Managers and people with responsibility for equipment need a basic understanding of fire, how it behaves and what systems should be used to control it. |
| Organising your business or team |
The organisation of a business or team can have a big impact on how safety is view, implemented and complied with, This includes delegation of responsibilities and a review of the basic training which businesses and managers should have in place. |
